Stand Up Blog #4

So today, being inspired by the documentary I Am Comic, I tested the open mic waters of Liquid Zoo. I was joined by Suwon and Shawn of my previous blogging fame. I gotta say, for this little dive bar in the valley, they have a really great open mic. The crowd of comics that show up is good and the host is really friendly. He actually sticks to the list as opposed to putting his friends up as they come in. Yeah you see some of the people from the other open mics at this place, but their cliquey shenanigans don't fly at the Liquid Zoo. As a matter of fact, Shawn and I showed up about 20 minutes before the list even came out and he remembered that so he let us sign up first. (We were both too chicken shit to go up first so we signed ourselves into spots 3 & 4) Shawn's jokes went over way better at the Liquid Zoo than they did at the Amsterdam Cafe, because he actually had a crowd of people that were into comedy as opposed to talking amongst their clique. My jokes got a lot of laughs too. I tried a new impromptu joke about Kim Kardashian that went over well. Suwon got a case of the Liquid Zoo jitters, I know its tough to overcome, that place is the open mic mecca. But she got over them and finished strong. She said later that she wanted to know what it felt like to stand up there and say nothing, kind of like when the Dos Equis guy once had an awkward moment, just to know what it felt like.

But I can't stop going on and on about Liquid Zoo. Most people would have been more excited to be performing at the World Famous Comedy Store, and although that was cool and all, it's no liquid zoo. For starters, you have to talk over the people playing pool at the pool table, and then they have the TV's on to distract people. Not only are the TV's on, but they have the closed captioning on so you can follow the show rather than watch the comics. So yeah, you have your work cut out for you when performing there. But for the most part, the crowd was cool and they laughed at everybody....except the heavyset girl that went up with the I (Godzilla) Tokyo shirt. But she just wasn't funny :(

So yeah, the Liquid Zoo is my new favorite place to go to for open mics, I will be back.
